Crops Look Promising
After the Met Office recorded the coldest spring for 50 years, the cooler start to the growing season during April- mid May saw slow plant development. June saw temperatures rise and crops began to respond well, with rapidly expanding canopies, and by the start of July the majority of crops were at 100% canopy and signs of flowering. Tuber initiation has been reported as good, with good numbers and the foundations in place for respectable yields. The recent hot weather, which we are all grateful to see, however, is starting to have an impact on crops, especially those without irrigation. So let's look forward to what looks to be a promising year for potatoes and keep our fingers crossed for respectable yields.
